Upstream Consultancy · Chennai & International
Integrated geoscience studies, specialist petrophysics, field development planning, and upstream equipment sourcing — PetroCrat brings seasoned technical rigour to every engagement.
Who we are
PetroCrat is an independent upstream technical and commercial consultancy, focused on helping clients unlock value from complex subsurface challenges.
Our core belief is straightforward: finding oil and gas is fundamentally a rock-driven phenomenon. Imagining what is happening at rock and pore level — and integrating all available data to build that picture — is the key to opening up fields that others have overlooked.
We thrive on overcoming complex challenges and delivering results that clients did not think possible. The scale of our engagements ranges from a few hours of advisory on a potential investment, through to multi-year exploration and appraisal projects drawing on a broad team of technical and commercial specialists.

What we do
PetroCrat operates across two distinct but complementary practice areas — integrated geoscience and technical consultancy on one hand, and upstream equipment sourcing and procurement support on the other. Together they cover the full spectrum of what operators and investors need to make confident decisions.
Our subsurface team brings deep technical capability across the full exploration and production lifecycle — from prospect generation and reservoir characterisation through to field development planning and production optimisation.
Buying or renting oil and gas production equipment is highly capital-intensive. PetroCrat supports operators' contract and procurement teams in making better sourcing decisions — reducing cost, managing supply risk, and ensuring project delivery.
Geoscience services
The purpose of the integrated approach to full field development planning is to improve concept selection at the pre-FEED stage through the sharing of data, knowledge and expertise. It allows us to incorporate all reservoir uncertainties and bring the full range of development options into consideration.
FDP is PetroCrat's unique speciality. Our strategic studies commence from a resource assessment and include a significant field development component, assessing all options available for a particular asset or situation.
Once options are established, we apply economic analysis and risk assessment to advise on the optimal route forward — whether a single development pathway or a multi-pronged approach. We help manage risks throughout the asset lifecycle, whether related to the environment, asset performance, or market requirements.
Our team can address detailed questions on reserves determination, cost estimating, reservoir modelling, and strategic planning — providing a robust, fully integrated solution for any exploration or development requirement.
Integrated approach combining subsurface, surface and economics to optimise development concept at the earliest stage.
Rigorous volumetric and dynamic assessment aligned with industry reporting standards.
Static and dynamic model inputs derived from robust, core-calibrated petrophysical properties.
Multi-year asset strategies accounting for uncertainty, phasing, and commercial objectives.
A significant proportion of recoverable hydrocarbons in producing fields remains unrecovered — bypassed by historical drilling or overlooked in earlier evaluations. PetroCrat specialises in identifying and quantifying these opportunities through systematic re-evaluation of existing well data.
Our asset evaluation work spans new opportunity screening through to full field appraisal, leveraging integrated log, core, and production data to reframe what a field can deliver.
Systematic reprocessing and reinterpretation of legacy well data to identify overlooked productive intervals.
Rapid technical and commercial screening of prospective assets and investment opportunities.
Play fairway analysis, prospect generation and inventory management for active exploration programmes.
Acquisition and processing programme design and management to optimise subsurface imaging.
As primary and secondary recovery rates decline, Enhanced Oil Recovery — particularly thermal methods — represents a significant value opportunity for heavy-oil operators. PetroCrat evaluates EOR potential across a range of techniques and reservoir types.
We work with clients to screen EOR candidates, model incremental recovery, and assess the integration of technologies such as Direct Contact Steam Generation (DCSG) that simultaneously enhance recovery while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Technical screening of thermal, chemical, and miscible EOR candidates across asset portfolios.
SAGD, CSS, steamflooding, and DCSG evaluation for heavy and extra-heavy oil reservoirs.
Dynamic simulation of EOR scenarios to quantify production uplift and project economics.
Evaluating EOR technologies that reduce surface GHG emissions while maintaining or improving recovery.
Sound investment decisions in the upstream require technical and commercial thinking to be tightly integrated. PetroCrat provides economic analysis and strategic advisory that connects subsurface insight directly to business outcomes.
Whether advising an operator on a specific asset acquisition, supporting a reserves audit, or helping frame a long-term portfolio strategy, we provide rigorous, independent analysis grounded in real technical understanding.
Rapid techno-economic assessment of exploration and development investment opportunities.
Independent technical review aligned with SPE-PRMS and other recognised standards.
Probabilistic evaluation of technical and commercial risk across development options.
Portfolio-level strategic planning, asset prioritisation and development sequencing.
Specialist petrophysics
We specialise in advanced petrophysical techniques, integrating all available data to arrive at the true picture of a reservoir. Our capabilities span deterministic and probabilistic evaluations, robust petrophysical property development for static and dynamic models, reserve studies, and fractured reservoir assessments — for both open-hole and cased-hole environments.
Quick-look evaluations are turned around in 8 hours or less from data receipt, covering net reservoir, porosity, water saturation, and a brief interpretive summary. Multi-well studies develop robust petrophysical models for volumetrics, mapping, reservoir simulation and reserves audit.
Multi-mineral inversion calibrated with XRD and routine core analysis to define subsurface mineralogy and porosity type.
Thomeer, Skelt, Cuddy and J-function models integrated with core capillary pressure and fluid density data.
Waxman-Smits, Juhasz and electrical efficiency resistivity models for clay-bearing reservoir zones.
Flow Zone Index, R-35, Kozeny-Carman, Timur and Tixier — all calibrated to core measurements.
Poisson's ratio, Young's modulus and brittleness index for fracture stimulation design and wellbore stability.
Buckley-Leverett fractional flow prediction and rock facies classification from log data.

Equipment sourcing
Buying oil and gas production equipment is highly capital-intensive. Selecting the right equipment — from drilling rigs to offshore facilities — requires both technical judgement and commercial acumen. PetroCrat supports operators' contract and procurement teams and vendors' strategic planning functions in making better sourcing decisions.
We enable better procurement decisions, comfortable project deliveries and bottom-line cost savings by identifying supply bottlenecks and opportunities, managing supplier relationships, and providing market intelligence that gives clients a real commercial edge.
